I was sitting in a meeting this morning and staring out the window for a moment. The only thing in my view were the few dozen cars sitting unused in the parking lot just baking in the sun and not providing anything to their owners or the business.
I thought to myself, what’s the point of all that wasted space? Sure the parking lot provides a use for people who need a place to put their cars while they’re at the office, but beyond that, it’s really just a total waste of space and perfectly good real estate.
This got me questioning exactly how much unused parking space is there in Florida? Well a couple Google searches didn’t reveal anything specific, but a look at the map of my local Target shows something interesting.
Just look at that! Ignoring the wasted roof space on the stores themselves, the parking lot takes up as much space as the shops. That’s a lot of potential, money-making, profit building, cost saving area they could be utilizing.
It this one relatively small shopping center took the initiative and covered their parking spaces in solar, they’d be providing multiple benefits to themselves. They’d reduce their energy costs, they’d give shoppers a shaded place to park their cars, and they’d be putting out a signal to potential shoppers that they’re a forward-facing, environmentally conscious brand focused on giving back.
It’s a win-win-win! Add the tax incentives to that, and they’d be printing money!
