Where Does Florida Get Its Electricity?

Florida is one of the top energy producers in the US, second only to Texas. Yet, most of our energy is derived through methods that can only be produced from resources Florida does not provide.

Most of Florida’s electricity is made through the burning on Natural Gas. nearly two-thirds of electricity is generated from Natural Gas. The rest of Florida’s electricity is created from coal, nuclear, and some renewable options. Due to the massive tourism industry and Florida’s large population, we actually import electricity from other states during some peak times.

Florida imports the Natural Gas it uses from many surrounding states. It also imports the coal used in those plants from other states in the US. Even the nuclear power plants in Florida require fuel imported from outside the state. Other than a smattering of small solar plants, and some biomass production, all of Florida’s electricity is dependent upon other states.

In a state where most days are covered in sun, it seems odd that we wouldn’t take advantage of the opportunity that creates. Rather than importing energy and energy producing options from elsewhere in the US, we have the ability to be an energy creator.

By installing solar on your home or business, you can help turn this trend around. You can provide your own home with energy, and help the state become an electricity exporter, rather than an importer.

Help put Florida on the positive side of power creation, invest in solar today.
